SATEL radio modems are used in place of data cables and / or phone lines and are typically placed at locations where cable connections are impossible or too costly to build. Range of the modems is typically between 1-25 miles, depending on the terrain and output power. Longer distances can be handled by routing the message through radio modems acting as repeaters.
